Well, we worked hard, did our best, and we had a respectable showing. But at the end of the day I was not able to reach enough voters to get new representation in Utah's 3rd. I would like to thank all 51,017 of you that voted for me--a 31-year-old political novice who has never before sought political office. I appreciate your prayers and hopes that you placed in me. I hold your trust very close to my heart. For those of you that I did not earn your vote, I hope we can get get to know each other better in the future. I appreciate all the help and hope of our many contributors and volunteers in our campaign. We learned a lot and will be better for our cause next time. This may be the end of this campaign, but it is just the beginning of us working for a better future.

Rep. Chris Cannon has served five terms in Congress with little to show for it. It's time for a change. His opponent in the 3rd Congressional District, Democrat Christian Burridge, is an articulate young attorney who practices consumer law. A former college debate champion, he has both a passion for advocacy and a solid grasp of major issues that face the nation.

At 31, he would be one of the youngest members of Congress, but as he rightly points out, that would be appropriate in a district with one of the youngest populations in the nation. The Tribune's Editorial Board believes that 3rd District voters would be better served by a young man who would be enthusiastically engaged in the job than an incumbent who, frankly, doesn't show much interest.

We also are concerned that Cannon is tone deaf to ethical questions. He makes no apologies for giving ear to the blandishments of his brother, Joe, a professional lobbyist, when the latter is representing a client. But a congressman has a public duty to hold himself apart from even the appearance of influence by special interests.

Cannon's former chief of staff, David Safavian, has been convicted of misleading investigators about his role in a golf junket to Scotland as part of the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal. Cannon himself has not been implicated in the mess, though he did return a $2,000 campaign contribution from Abramoff. Nor did Safavian's misdeeds occur while he was working for Cannon.

But Cannon's positions on legislation while Safavian was working for him coincided remarkably with those of former clients of his chief of staff, who was himself a former lobbyist. Cannon says that is purely coincidental. Otherwise, Cannon has voted the Republican party line on a remarkably long list of disastrous policies, from the war in Iraq to both versions of the Patriot Act to the Terri Schiavo fiasco to the extension of the Bush tax cuts.

Burridge, by contrast, is no socialist. A native Utahn, he's a graduate of Brigham Young University's law school, and he stands for protecting the rights of the unborn and traditional marriage. But he also believes that neocon efforts to abandon public education, worker rights, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid are not Utah values.

We think he's right.

Perhaps his outburst was fueled by guilt, shame, and worry. Awfully
defensive for no good reason.

The conclusion of a debate between candidates for Utah's 3rd Congressional District became heated Friday when one participant tried to link the incumbent, U.S. Rep. Chris Cannon, to a lobbyist/bribery scandal.
Cannon, a Republican, denounced statements by his Democratic opponent, Christian Burridge, who was noting the fact that Cannon's former chief of staff was convicted on charges stemming from the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal.
Burridge's comments came during his closing statement, which he dedicated to calling for lobbyist and ethics reform in Congress, including a two- to five-year blackout period to limit the "revolving door" between Congress and lobbying firms.
"In our 3rd District congressional office," Burridge said, "David Safavian, who was a gambling lobbyist who worked for Jack Abramoff, came in to our office, ran our office and then lobbied --"
Cannon: "Pardon me. May I just interject here?"
Burridge: "No, it's my 30 seconds."

Chris Cannon hid from his record today when he interrupted Democrat Christian Burridge in a debate hosted by the Daily Herald. Christian Burridge was explaining his position on ethics reform in a open-issue statement period at the end of the debate. Christian explained that the Congress needs to reform the revolving door between lobbying firms and congressional offices by putting time bans in between work in lobbying firms and congressional offices. He pointed to the fact that Chris Cannon hired ex-lobbyist and convicted federal felon David Safavian who worked for convicted federal felon Jack Abramoff before and after he was hired by Chris Cannon to work in our 3rd District Congressional office.

While Burridge was in mid-sentence, Cannon interrupted Burridge and claimed he was being "personally attacked." Also, he argued that Burridge broke so-called universally recognized "debate rules" with his "attack." After defending Safavian he demanded an apology.

Burridge stated that Cannon interrupted his statement because Cannon did not want the audience to know about his Abramoff/Safavian connection.

Cannon broke the debate rules by interrupting Burridge during his time to speak. When someone stifles speech they usually have something to hide. We call for the Congressman to explain his relationship with David Safavian and Jack Abramoff and why he felt Burridge's statements were so threatening to act in such an unprofessional manner.

New polling data show that Dems are opening a wide lead to take control of the United States House of Representatives. According to a recent USA Today Gallup Poll Americans nationwide will vote for Democrats 59% over Republicans 36% as of October 8. This compares to a September 17th poll where both parties were tied at 48%.

WEST JORDAN, UT. - Congressman Chris Cannon has missed some votes this year. A lot of votes. In fact, Congressman Cannon has missed more votes than both of his Utah congressional colleagues combined.

It is not unusual for a member of Congress to miss votes during the session; Representatives are busy with committee assignments and addressing constituent concerns. However, Congressman Cannon, who represents Utah’s third district, has missed 102 votes thus far in the 109th Congress, including key votes addressing transportation and security matters that directly affect his district. Congressman Bishop, on the other hand, has missed just 60 votes this session, and Congressman Matheson has missed only seven.

Christian Burridge, Rep. Cannon’s Democratic challenger in the November 7th election, called the record “shameful.” “The Third District deserves a full time representative in the Congress,” Burridge declared. “When elected, I will work full time for the people of my district.”

WEST JORDAN, UT.- Congressman Chris Cannon voted with only thirty members in the US House Thursday against a prescription drug relief program for veterans.

In Thursday’s vote the House passed an amendment to defense spending bill 5122 directing pharmaceutical companies to provide discount prescription drugs at retail pharmacies for military veterans (amnd. 434). Congressman Cannon was the only member of the Utah House delegation to vote against the measure. The amendment passed by a wide margin, 374-30, with 181 Republicans voting in favor of the legislation. A similar provision has already passed in the Senate, with Utah Senators Hatch and Bennett voting in favor of the provision.

The amendment will provide discount prescription drugs at all retail outlets for military veterans enrolled in the Tricare health network.

Christian Burridge, Rep. Cannon’s Democratic opponent in the November 7th election stated, “As someone who grew up in a military family I am close to people that use Tricare—I can say I would have voted for the Amendment. Our veterans and their families deserve the support of their representative. Congressman Cannon has voted to send our troops to war, but fails to support them when they return home.”

In today's Reader's Forum in the Deseret Morning News I read about a woman's plea for help. She said,

Who will listen to teachers?
I just came home after
working five hours overtime without pay. I'll likely do the same tomorrow, and
the next day, which is often my routine. Why? Because with 240 students in my
English classes, overtime is unavoidable to grade all the papers and
tests. Of my six classes, five exceed 40 students. I've no
doubt someone else out there in Utah's public schools can top me.
I'm not sure why we Utahns are putting up with these grievous
circumstances. We say we want smaller classes. We say we're willing to pay more
taxes to get them. We recognize that too many students means kids don't get the
attention and help they need. And yet, each year, it's the same situation. I
already know who is not listening to us. What I want to know is, who will?

Vice Chair of Utah Dem Party (Active LDS member) Rob Miller's letter to Senator Bennett

Dear Senator Bennett,
As an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and as vice chair of the Utah State Democratic Party, and as the father of three potential Mormon Democrats, I am truly taken back by your comments that were printed in the Standard-Examiner article by Andy Howell titled, "Utah Senator: Democrats have forced out moderate Mormons".

I have always looked to you as a man of "reason". My father in-law, Patriarch Devon Doney, has told me that he served with you in the Army, and that he holds you in high regard, as I am sure do a majority of your constituents. Even Congressman Jim Matheson has stated his high regard for you.

With that said, the question I must ask you is this, when did political deceit and baring false images against your fellow Utahns become a part of your nature?

Simply put, your blatant lie is reprehensible and is an insult to the leadership and membership of the Utah Democratic Party, as well as The First Presidency of the LDS Church who purposely changed the wording of this year's neutrality statement to represent this truth, "Principles compatible with the gospel may be found in the platforms of all major political parties..." This statement has brought comfort to so many LDS Democrats who have suffered unjustly at the hand of discrimination not because the have done anything wrong, but due to the fact that their conscience could not, and would not allow them to feel comfortable participating in their constitutional rights as members of the Republican Party.

I would also like to ask if you ever thought about the harm you may have caused to the children of people like myself who are proud Democrats? Can you imagine my children coming home from school after being told by their classmates that their father is "anti Mormon"?

Senator Bennett, in the name of honesty and decency I ask that you revoke your lie and the clear and intentional misrepresentation of the Utah Democratic Party, its leaders, and membership. Only a public apology will suffice and clear you from bearing falsehoods against your neighbor. You have been giving great opportunity to do good in your life; it would be a shame to see you lose your ethical character in the name of fear and in the pursuit of absolute power.

1st District Dem Candidate (and LDS Bishop) Steve Bishop responds to Senator Bennett

Dear Senator Bennett,

Last Wednesday, I received a call from Andy Howell from the Standard Examiner. He wondered if he could get my comment on a statement from you: that the Utah Democratic Party is the “anti-Mormon” party.

In the subsequent article in the paper, Andy wrote that I was “surprised” by your comments. Surprised is accurate – and I would add, very disappointed. I’ve respected you through the years, and really thought you were above resorting to the old “you can’t be a good Mormon and a Democrat” charge. I guess it just goes to show how hubris born of too much unchallenged power can even affect nice guys like you.

But as I thought about it, I realized your confusion probably results from the fact that you don’t spend much time around your non-Republican constituents. I might be able to help you there. As a recently converted Democrat and first time candidate, I’ve traveled all around Northern Utah meeting large numbers of Utah Democrats for the first time. I thought you’d be interested in learning about the Utah Democrats I’ve run into.

One group I’ve grown close to is the Tooele County Democrats. There are some great folk out there. One typical example is County Sheriff Frank Park and his pretty wife Randi. (Frank groused to me good naturedly that Randi had distributed more copies of my booklet than she had of his campaign pamphlet.) The first night at the Tooele County Fair, Randi and I had an interesting conversation – not about politics, but about her seven-year tenure as ward Primary president. I pumped her for some pointers on how her bishop had talked her into staying that long; I figured the information might be useful.Of course, one can’t mention Tooele County Democrats without a reference to that radical, blame-America-first liberal, Representative Jim Gowans. (I hope the sarcasm wasn’t too subtle for you, Senator.) It was quite the experience to stand next to this respected rancher and citizen-legislator at a booth in Stansbury Park recently and see the great respect the people out there have towards him.

I’ve also become great friends with Jan and Art Douglas, who live in Howell, up in Box Elder County. Art reminds me a lot of my grandfather (except, of course, Grandpa Olsen was a whole lot taller). He’s a throwback to those great Roosevelt Democrat farmers like my grandpa, who would never vote for a Republican because they didn’t stand up for the little guy. I spent about an hour with Art outside the auction barn at the Box Elder County Fair while he introduced me to people that walked by – and he knew everybody! It was pretty amazing. Of course, you know Art – he’s related his discussion with you where you were quite flippant towards his concerns about the state of the American family farm. And of course, there’s former Representative Eli Anderson, who’s running for County Commission – a good ol’ Utah boy if there ever was one. It was a sad day for rural Northern Utah when they lost that last remaining “D” in the Legislature.

Down in Davis County are some great folk, including Richard Watson, the county chair and Legislative candidate who popularized the “LDS Democrat” baseball cap, and my dear friend Rob Miller, State Party Vice-Chair and County Commission candidate, with whom I’ve had some very spiritual Gospel discussions.

Let’s not forget my home here in Weber County. I was privileged to have Bishop Neil Hansen and Bishop Scott Jenkins (otherwise known as Rep. Hansen (D) and Sen. Jenkins (R)) accept invitations to speak in our ward’s sacrament meeting the last Sunday in July. The two men obviously had a lot of respect for each other, and the ward members are still commenting on what a wonderful message each of these great men presented. And of course, there’s that sweet former school teacher, Lou Shirtliff. Lou and I had an interesting discussion recently about her letter writing campaign to KSL Radio, where she has repeatedly asked them a simple question: How can you guys carry the loving words of the Prophet twice a year, and then pollute the airwaves with the hateful propaganda of Sean Hannity during the week? A Quixotic quest, to be sure, but I respect her for fighting for what’s right.

I also need to mention former Senator Ed Allen, a gracious, kindly Ogden physician with a long history of Church leadership whose eyes flash in anger these days when he talks about what the Republicans are doing to his country.

I could go on, but you get the drift. I think you would not be nearly so judgmental about Utah Democrats if you actually ever spent time around any. True, some of our more liberal brethren and sisters tend to be more vocal and are in the media a little more (reference that “big tent” thing that you said we didn’t practice). But to call the rank-and-file folk I’ve met the last six months “anti-Mormon” is the most ludicrous thing I’ve ever heard. And by the way, I’ve never seen anyone more respectful toward the Church and its leaders and members than our current State Chair, Wayne Holland, who by the way, was elected by a majority of us Democrats.

Don’t think I’m offended. I’m sure rank and file Utah Democrats aren’t either; after all, they’re used to this kind of thing every election season from you guys. But I do think you owe the First Presidency an apology for your comments, which were very disrespectful to the Church.

So just what is it about the statements, “the Church does not endorse any political party or candidate” or “all major political parties contain values consistent with the Gospel” that is unclear to you?

Senator Bennett Uses 'Scorched Earth' Divisive Rhetoric

I always thought that Senator Bennett was more thoughtful than what his inflammatory rhetoric exhibited when he said that Utah Democrats are the "anti-Mormon party." Senator Bennett has just blatantly attacked thousands of his constituents and fellow Mormons. As an active LDS member and federal candidate from the Democratic Party, I cannot let this absurd statement go unrefuted. I have met thousands of Utah Democrats--Mormon and those of other belief systems--and I have never heard an anti-Mormon sentiment. In fact, the people that adhere to non-LDS belief systems have shown me nothing but respect, support and a high regard for the LDS people.

As a returned missionary that has defended my LDS faith among many right-wing Republican and anti-Mormon people in western Michigan, I find his statement hurtful and lacking in serious thought. At BYU Law School I was trained by serious thinking LDS Democrats who taught me to take a more dynamic approach to considering American politics and trends in constitutional history.

The LDS faith has a longtime tradition of supporting principles of checks and balances and separation of powers, which are tantamount to our American constitutional tradition--which can only be achieved with at least a two-party system. Senator Bennett's comments are a hasty generalization and extreme. If anything, his remarks are pushing moderates away from his camp. I am disappointed by his politicization of religion. Senator Bennett owes an apology to the thousands of faithful LDS Democrats for his insensitive remarks.

In President's Hinckley's book Standing for Something, the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said the following about the fading civility in our world,

"We simply must work unitedly to remove from our hearts and to drive from our
society all elements of hatred, bigotry, racism, and other divisive actions and
words that limit a person's ability to progress, learn, and be fully accepted. Snide remarks or racial slurs, hateful epithets, malicious gossip, and mean and vicious rumor mongering have no place among us."

It is time to elect leaders that are going to work to solve the serious issues confronting Utahns. Those politicians who want to wedge our community with divisive and hateful rhetoric should be called home. This rhetoric does not fix our schools, our transportation problems, our health care crisis or keep America safer. Let us unite as a community and work for a better future.

Today the Salt Lake Tribune denounced Rep. Chris Cannon in an Editorial here. The Editor pointed out,

"Chris Cannon is wrong. Chris Cannon is so wrong that he sounds as though he is willfully blind to his ethical dilemma. We believe, however, that the voters of Utah's 3rd Congressional District are not so blind and, if asked, would hold their elected representative to a higher standard."

A story ran all over the country today about the ethical considerations of Joe Cannon, Utah State Republican Party Chairman lobbying his Brother and former business partner Rep. Chris Cannon. See the SL Tribune here. On KSL's Nightside Project Chris Cannon was asked if he would stop letting Joe Cannon lobby him. Chris Cannon said "No."

Let me tell you why congressional ethics rules are important and should not be just discarded. Congress has ethics rules prohibiting appearances of impropriety and conflicts of interest so the American people don't lose faith in the system. It is not the issue as to whether or not they do anything that is improper it is the appearance of impropriety that does the system in. Federal Judges recuse themselves from cases all the time for merely appearances and not actual real bias or conflicts. In fact, they are ethically obliged to do so. The same applies for our members of Congress.

Rep. Cannon says that Joe Cannon works for one of the "biggest law firms in the world." If Joe Cannon's firm is so huge, why can't they send over another lobbyist to avoid the ethical questions? It better not be because it is inconvenient, you don't dodge your ethics because of convenience.

Rep. Cannon says he cannot control his brother. Well a congressman can control his office and Joe Cannon's firm has other lobbyists. I call on Rep. Cannon to do the right thing and take the less convenient course and avoid the appearance of impropriety.

Youngest State In Nation Needs Voice for Future

Utah again ranked as the youngest state in the nation. Look at a recent Deseret News article about our state. We need a voice that will fight for our future. This week I received a unanimous endorsement from the Utah Educators Association. My opponent did not receive this distinction. What UEA knows about me--after almost an hour and a half of being questioned by their leadership panel--is that is that I have a vested interest in our public schools. My first daughter will start kindergarten next year. I am in this for the long haul. We need a congressman that sees the big picture. Someone who does not treat their position in Congress as a hobby or a nice pseudo-retirement option. But someone who is willing to work full-time for our future. Here are some issues where my opponent and I differ:

I am absolutely opposed to ANY nuclear testing in Nevada.
I am opposed to any centralized control of our school curriculum in NCLB.
I am in favor of keeping Pell Grants and Student Loans in line with rising costs of tuition.
I am in favor of capping guaranteed bankruptcy proof student loan interest at 4%.

Let's fight for our future together.

We Need Ethics Reform in Congress

As I travel the district I often hear that many people have lost interest in the political process. I have often wondered: why? People feel that they don't have a voice, that it does not matter what they say or do because the lobbyists in Washington are going to get what they want anyway so one might as well just be apathetic. This is exactly the attitude that the special interests in Washington want--voters to feel powerless and let the first pigs that can rout their way to the trough to get the goods. This is a very dangerous trend and leads to destabilization of our democracy. That is why I stand for comprehensive ethics reform.

I call on my opponent to do the same.

We need an independent commission to investigate Ethics misconduct in Congress.
We need to impose an effective gift and travel ban.
We need to end the money chase. This means public financing for candidates running for federal office.
We need to slow the revolving door. This means effective time limits from jumping from K Street into Congress or senior staff positions or from Congress or senior staff positions to K Street. David Safavian was a gambling lobbyist working for Jack Abramoff when Congressman Cannon hired him to be the 3rd District's Chief of Staff. Then after Congressman Cannon took money from gambling interests and then then voted on gambling legislation Safavian went back to Abramoff and his other gambling clients. Later Abramhoff took a deal and is now in prison. Safavian took another job with the administration, was later indicted, went to trial and was convicted and is now in federal prison. The Third District deserves better.
We need to shine a light on lobbyist activities. Sunlight is always the best disinfectant.

No Multi-Millionaire Left Behind

Marrying the elimination of the estate tax to an increase in the minimum wage is unconscionable. It is another bait and swich proposal and bamboozels the American people. It is the story of Robin Hood--in reverse--it steals from the poor and gives to the rich. Lets compare the two proposals:

according to the Economic Policy Institute the average increase in pay for a worker on minimum wage is $1100.00 a year. Though if one worked all year round it could be as high as $4400.00 a year.
Increasing the minimum wage would affect 6.6 million people.

On the other hand,

Making permanent the Paris Hilton tax cut would only apply to 8200 people.
Their windfall: the average is $1,300,000.00 with 90 estates getting as high as $5,400,000.00 in 2011.

These windfalls and irresponsible give-aways must be paid for in the future. While the politicians in power have their cake and eat it too, our next generations get to pay the credit card bill. How much will it cost the U.S. Treasury? $300,000,000,000.00. By raiding the treasury to give Paris Hilton more of her daddy's money, this policy eventually shifts the tax burden to working families. By the way, my opponent--who stands to benefit himself from this bill as he is a multi-millionaire--voted for this bill which according to a Salt Lake Tribune Editorial is sure to die in the Senate. It is time to disconnect these measures and pass a meaningful minimum wage increase with no strings attached.

I first met Joe Bennion at the Sanpete County Convention in Manti early in the campaign season. I was happy to go and buy some hand crafted pottery from Joe at his shop called Horseshoe Mountain Pottery on the main drag in Spring City in Sanpete County. Spring City is the most well preserved village based on Mormon settlement patterns in Utah. Here are directions. Joe makes fine hand crafted pottery in a shop that is based on the honor system. This means if no one is around to tend shop a customer can come in and leave their money on the counter and take some pottery. Go visit his shop, it is worth the drive all by itself.

Inflation Heating Up--Utahns feeling the squeeze

Inflation jumped higher than it has since 1994 according to an inflation gauge closely watched by the Federal Reserve. This number did not take not account the latest run up in gas prices as oil hit a record high $77.03 a barrel on July 14. As Congress allows themselves another pay raise, the same Congress does nothing to bring the minimum wage into line with cost of living increases in America. As working class Americans continue to feel the squeeze, our millionaire in Congress in the 3rd district is silent on how to help the people of the 3rd District make ends meet.

Here are some of my positions:

Cap federally guaranteed student loan interest at 4% and support continuation of pell grants and subsidized student loans to helps students and parents pay for college.
Demand a transparent energy policy that is not made in secret back door meetings by the energy companies like Enron
Increase the minimum wage
Demand equity of pay and benefits for members of the military in the Reserves and National Guard
support a prescription drug bill that is not written by the pharmaceutical lobby
pledge to not attempt to privatize Social Securitiy into the hands of wall street bankers

Cannon Says One Thing and Does Another Part 1

A little over ten years ago in 1996, Chris Cannon stated a core belief by championing the so-called "Contract with America" that was used in 1994. One plank of this conveniently all-but-forgotten promise used by people like Tom Delay and Newt Gingrich was a solemn vow for term limits. Oh, how times have changed. Here is a reminder of Cannon's vow to enforce term limits as a challenger to then Congressman Bill Orton in a June 15, 1996 edition of the Deseret News:

This is one of the most fundamental ways to clean up Congress and bring back a
citizen legislature as envisioned by our founding fathers. It will
effectively end congressional careerism," he said. Term limits tell
voters
that those elected are there to serve, not maintain personal fiefdoms
to benefit
friends, ideological cronies and lifelong personal agendas,
Cannon said.
We limited the president to two terms, why should
Congress be above that?"

Well, now Cannon is seeking a sixth term, so he can serve his 11th and 12th year in Congress. If Cannon was to hold on to his beliefs he would have retired after 8 years, the same as a President, which would have occurred in 2004.

So next time Cannon touts his experience and positions of committees remember his statement about personal fiefdoms. The next time he calls Jack Abramoff a "great guy" remember what he said about ideological cronies. Lets hold him to his word and term limit him in 2006.

Burridge Doubles His Points in Poll

Today, after being in the race for a little over four months, our numbers doubled since the last poll we had seen. According to a recent Dan Jones poll we stand at 24%. The first poll, when we were in the race about three weeks, we were at 12%. We have spent no money on media, have sent no mailers, and have done no canvassing--yet. But we have been in 20 parades. I am even ahead of millionaire, Utah State Legislator and REPUBLICAN LaVar Christiansen who logged in at 23% who is running against Democrat Jim Matheson. I think these numbers are more in line with the power of incumbancy rather than the Myth Machine's party line that always blabbers that this area is chuck full of Republicans. I stand by the proposition that most Utahns are independents. Interestingly, my opponent has a 39% disapproval rating. This is by far the highest disapproval rating among all of Utah's congressional delegation. The next closest disapproval rating is Senator Hatch at 24% and both Congressmen Bishop and Matheson are at 15%. See the numbers yourself.

We Need a Transparent Oil Policy

Today the Fed came out with some frightful news: Oil prices are starting to pressure inflationary tendencies in the U.S. Fed Chairman Ben Bernarke testified to Congress that even though economic activity is moderating, record high oil prices may cause inflation to get worse. Not only is it bad enough that we consumers are getting gouged at the pump, the back door energy policy of this administration and the do-nothing Congress has failed to deliver a future oriented energy policy. This is resulting in inflationary pressures that drive up interest rates and make working families' paycheck stretch less than before. All right after the Senate bats down a minimum wage increase that has not been raised in 10 years.

We need a future oriented energy policy that is open and transparent. Where the power of the presidency is not invoked claiming executive privilege when it was drafted in a back room with people like Enron's Ken Lay. Our Congress needs to look forward to cleaner domestic energy sources like wind, solar and bio-based fuels. Some technology could even stimulate our rural economies. Cellulosic ethanol could be made from materials grown in our rural counties giving them much needed economic infrastructure.

It is time to clean house in Washington. The decisions they make (or lack thereof) has a direct impact on our pocketbooks and how we survive in Utah.

I Never Thought Someone Could Say This About America

In the months leading up to my deciding to run for congress I was feeling some pent up frustration--and quite frankly--some bona fide fear. I am a consumer rights lawyer. That means that people come to me with all kinds of financial problems. Some people get into trouble when they get into car accidents, they get cancer or some other dehabilitating disease, their spouse leaves them and wants a divorce or an employee will steal from a client causing a business strain or even to go under. These situations cause financial disasters. Whether it is tax problems with the IRS, overwhelming debt that requires a settlement with creditors, or the last resort--bankruptcy. Sometimes I stand up against predatory lenders for my clients, and often we prevail. In the seeming dichotomy in the mercy/justice debate my practice advocates for mercy. I get satisfaction from this work.

However, after being surrounded by these problems on a daily basis I also see some alarming trends in our culture. The credit industry is so powerful in its marketing power that Poor Richard's advice of "a penny saved is a penny earned" perpetuated in the foundation of this country and through the 20th century seems to be turned on its ear. Now I see a prevalent maxim--"A penny borrowed is a penny earned." There are thousands of people cashing out their equity in their house for vacations and luxuries while maxing out their credit cards for eating out and Ipods. If I asked my clients in bankruptcy if they ever planned to be in their current situation they all would say no. Financial ruin sneaks up on you like a boa constrictor--it will slowly snuggle up, wrap around and suffocate its victim. Often its victim doesn't realize what is going on until it is too late.

After working in this industry, the national news I heard everyday was starting to wear on me. This Administration and Congress has been on a spending spree and has been incurring debt a lot like many of the people I see in my area of legal practice. I sometimes wonder if there is a correlation between the spending of our governement and the spending spree causing record numbers of bankruptcies. Our government has been racking up our nation's home equity line and maxing out their credit cards. The debt is so large that the generation in power will never be able to pay it off. It will fall to my generation and my children's and their children's generation to either pay it off or deal with its consequences.

They used to call democrats tax and spend liberals. I think it is worse to be a borrow and spend neo-con. At least the democrats of old would pay for their programs as they went along instead of passing their debts on to their grandchildren. I believe we cannot go back to the tax and spend days and we need to put in stop gap measures to prevent this even more pernicious trend of borrowing against our country's future. This will only happen through real campaign finance reform. We need to stop the phenomena where corporations invest a few million in contributions and get a few billion in pork in return. The fear of this trend leading our nation to insolvency was a major motivation for my running for Congress.

Though I have seen it coming, I was still in awe when I saw this article today, "US 'could be going bankrupt.'" I never thought that this proposition would even be brought up about the United States of America. The author of this argument is no crazy conspiracy theorist. He is Professor Laurence Kotlikoff for the Federal Reserve Bank of St Louis, a leading constituent of the US Federal Reserve. Professor Kotlikoff makes the following points:

"The proper way to consider a country's solvency is to examine the lifetime fiscal burdens facing current and future generations. If these burdens exceed the resources of those generations, get close to doing so, or simply get so high as to preclude their full collection, the country's policy will be unsustainable and can constitute or lead to national bankruptcy."
The United States has experienced high rates of inflation in the past and appears to be running the same type of fiscal policies that engendered hyperinflations in 20 countries over the past century."
Expecting a fix now is probably asking too much of short-sighted politicians who have no incentives to do so. But a fix, or at least a succession of patches, will come when the problem becomes more pressing."

We need members of Congress who not be a rubber stamp of the national party leaders. We need a change where our members will vote for reform--reform in the financing of elections, reform on pork barrel spending, reform on no bid contracts. Let us elect a freshman class of congress akin to the wave in 1974, when in the midst of the Watergate scandal, the freshman class of Congress was so large that it passed the first campaign finance reform, and the clean air and clean water legislation. These measures would have been impossible if incumbents remained in power.

Let us clean house and have a chance of saving our future from bankruptcy.

Pete Ashdown to the Rescue

Yesterday, it was over 100 degrees outside. After a late night of finalizing our FEC report and a morning of responding to some law clients, getting the FEC report in the mail and getting some necessary mailers out we got the car packed and were on the road an hour and a half behind schedule. The Ute Stampede Parade in Nephi started at 4:00 p.m. and we hit Point-of-the-Mountain at about 2:45.

"We will make it, we have been behind before," I thought outloud. We barely made it into the West Valley Parade after I pulled my hamstring running uphill to catch the van after chatting with some fellow Bingham High classmates in the Herriman Parade which was held almost contemporaneously with the West Valley Parade. We ran to catch our West Valley car which had gotten 200 yards into the parade before Marissa and I caught up while carrying Celia, Alma and a cooler full of Otter Pops. Though my leg was killing me, I remembered my high school football coach saying that champions keep hustling the whole game--even it it means playing while hurt.

It was at the Point-of-the-Mountain that we passed Pete Ashdown's motorhome--"The Blue Eagle." We honked and waved. Marissa said that even though we were late, Pete was going to be even later than us. However, in Springville, we started having trouble. It seems as if the fuel filter needed changing and the van started sputtering. The engine would just stop running in the middle of the freeway. I would pull over, restart the car, the engine would run normally and then we would be on the freeway again. After this scenario happened three or four times, the car stopped just east of Mona Reservoir and would not start again.

We did not even consider giving up. As my mentor, former college professor, drama director and first cousin once-removed, Kim Christison taught me--THE SHOW MUST GO ON! Kim is running for the State House of Representatives in District 68. We had planned to be in the parade in Nephi together. The Burridges and Christisons were early settlers and long time residents of Nephi and we wanted make sure that both came to "represent" in Nephi while making a united tribute to our common forbearers.

So I called Pete. About 2 minutes after my call the "Blue Eagle" pulled over, we loaded the kids, our candy, wagon and staffer and took off for Nephi. We made it to Nephi just in time and enjoyed a great crowd. I ran into former Miss Snow College 2nd attendant (1993) Paula Mangleson Nelson--daughter of famed and retired UHP trooper Paul Magleson. Also, I hugged one of my mission greenies from Eureka, Staff Sergeant Benjamin Grimstead, who just returned from courageous service in Iraq.

Thanks Pete. While Senator Hatch is bailing a drug toting record executive out of a Dubai Prison, Pete acted like a true good Samaritan. He saved my family on a hot freeway in Mona on the way to great parade.

America wants change--they overwhelmingly want Democrats

Throughout our campaign we have noticed something in the air. Utahns are ready for change and are ready for new leadership in Washington, D.C. I have met thousands of people in the last few months. They are tired of power concentrated in the hands of a few, they are tired of a one party controlled government. They are tired of a rubber-stamp Congress. They want change. A recent national poll exhibits this phenomena. Here is the article Most Americans Plan to Vote for Democrats. Just a few key points:

By a 3 to 1 margin Americans hold Congress in low regard and would like to see another party controlling Congress
If the election were held today 51% want Democrats while only 40% want Republicans
81% of Democratic base would vote for Democrats, 56% of moderates back their local Dem and 24% of Conservatives would switch over to vote for Democrats
Congress has 27% approval rating

The Article further noted:

Some criticism of Congress has focused on lawmakers' inability to control
spending, with lawmakers tucking in special projects for their home districts.
"They used to say there's nothing worse than a tax-and-spend liberal

The Christian Burridge for Congress campaign kicked off its ActBlue recruitment campaign on Thursday. ActBlue is an online clearing house where people can donate online and the money is forwarded to democratic candidates. Many people come to the campaign and ask how they can help. This program is a simple way you can help with very little time and very little money. Here is how it works:

1. Log on to our ActBlue page at the campaign's fundraising site.

2. Insert the name of your fundraising campaign in the first line. (Later, you can add multiple candidates to your profile.)

3. Put in your name or your organization in the next line.

4. Then make your pitch that is crafted to your friends, family, and associates when they consider donating to Christian Burridge for Congress. Be sure to talk about your beliefs and your connection to Christian Burridge when making your pitch.

5. Insert a personalized name to go on the URL so that when you tell your friends where to donate or insert the URL address in your email it will be easy to remember.

6. Upload your profile.

7. After the profile is uploaded you are given a chance to make a donation. Please set an example by making a donation at this critical step. Whether you donate hundreds or $5, $10, $25, or $50 it doesn't matter just donate so you will appear as a fundraiser on the "see who's raising" site.

Most notably BYU Political Science Professor Quin Monson, who conducted the exit polling in the closed GOP Cannon/Jacob primary, points out that Burridge has a chance in this race if he can raise enough money. Monson was quoted as saying "It sounds like he's the right kind of Democrat to have a chance from a policy and ideological perspective. . ."

Latest myths being repeated by Pundits:

"The Third District is Overwhelmingly Republican."

"The Race is Virtually Over."

"It is Impossible for a Democrat to Win in Such a Republican District."

"Bush Won With Such a Large Percentage That a Democrat Can't Win in This District."

I am surprised how many of the "insiders" in Utah politics or out-of-state pundits want to call the race. But I ask them: have you examined the history of this district and have you looked at its current make-up?

Let us examine the Facts.

The 3rd district was extensively overhauled after the 2000 election when the GOP-controlled legislature made a failed attempt to gerrymander Congressman Jim Matheson out of his seat. Lets look at the 3rd district when Christian's opponent took office: the 1996 through 2000 cycles when Donald Dunn was the Democratic nominee. The District consisted of the following counties: Carbon, Daggett, Duschesne, Emery, Garfield, Grand, Kane, Morgan, Piute, San Juan, Sevier, Summit, Uintah, Utah and Wayne. Also, the district had about 43,500 people who voted in 1996 in Salt Lake County.

However, the district drastically changed in 2002. The new district is now comprised of the west side of Salt Lake County, which had 125,000 people who voted in 2004. Utah County was left without Highland, Alpine, most of Lehi, and American Fork. The east half of Juab County was added, along with all of Millard and Beaver counties. Sanpete and Sevier counties were left in the 3rd. All of the other counties were given to Matheson. With some of the highest concentrations of red-leaning precincts taken out of Utah County, and the addition of heavily blue-leaning areas like West Valley, Kearns, and Taylorsville as well as swing areas like West Jordan and incorporated Salt Lake County, the district is remarkably different than what most pundits believe.

We Democrats have only run two cycles in this vastly changed district, and neither of the candidates raised more than $100,000.00. Christian is the first BYU educated lawyer to run for the seat as a Democrat since Bill Orton.

But then there is the Bush factor. This is the argument that the national pundits like to use. They look at the President's numbers and then just impute his numbers over to Cannon. This is a hasty generalization and is inconsistent with Utah voting patterns when Utahns have a Democratic candidate who appeals to them and their values. In 2000, Bush won with 71% of the vote. But in the same year Matheson won with 55% of the vote. In 1996 Clinton lost with 32%. Meanwhile, Bill Orton received 47% of the vote in "official results." (We will discuss an interesting piece of history on the 1996 unofficial results in a later blog.) Finally, in 1992 and 1994 Bill Orton won with percentages in the high fifties, while Clinton finished third in Utah in 1992. All of these facts indicate that Utahns are reliable cross-over voters. To use a presidential vote as a predictor for a Utah congressional race is like using last year's BYU football record to predict this year's Bingham High football season. They are apples and oranges. The analogy is misleading and stretched. Use the history of the district--not another race for another office in another year.

With the GOP primary over, the media is now giving our race more attention. What better way for this to begin than with a Deseret News front page feature story about Christian?

Be sure to read this article, also in today's Deseret News, which includes Christian's response to Mr. Jacob's attacks after Jacob has been eliminated from the race. Perhaps Mr. Jacob is starting to run his 2008 race against the future congressman for the third district, Christian Burridge?

But first, if you weren't watching CNN yesterday afternoon, you missed a discussion of the third district race, with some commentary about Christian, on Lou Dobbs Tonight. The program's transcript gives us the following:

Congressman Cannon's Democratic opponent, by the way, in November will be one Christian Burridge, a political novice as well. Burridge is an attorney who practices immigration law and who strongly favors a so-called comprehensive immigration reform package, including, of course, amnesty for illegal aliens. It should be quite a contest.

Christian's position on immigration is not amnesty. Though Mr. Dobbs made this statement without contacting Christian first, Christian would be happy to explain his position on immigration to Mr. Dobbs at any time. This is a complex issue that deserves discussion without generalizations.

Demo gunning for Cannon

Did you get a little tired of hearing about illegal immigration during the 3rd Congressional District Republican primary?

Now that Rep. Chris Cannon has won the GOP nomination, his Democratic opponent, Christian Burridge, says immigration won't be the front-and-center issue for the final race.

Cannon's "poor record" will be, Burridge said Wednesday.

In Tuesday's primary, final but unofficial figures show Cannon defeated fellow Republican John Jacob 55.8 percent to 44.2 percent. Cannon received 32,306 votes to Jacob's 25,589. Jacob, a millionaire through water and land development, gave his campaign $413,000 — so he ended up spending just over $16 for every vote he received.

Illegal immigration was the main theme of the primary. An anti-illegal immigration political action committee — Team America — spent more than $40,000 on independent radio ads, slamming Cannon and praising Jacob.

Writing on the National Journal's Hotline, political analyst Richard Cohen said Wednesday that Cannon's victory reinforces GOP House incumbents across the nation. Where once Roll Call magazine, which covers Congress, placed Cannon as one of the 10 most vulnerable incumbents in the nation, with Cannon's solid win over an anti-illegal immigration candidate, the often shrill, but relatively small-in-number, anti-illegal immigration candidates are not faring well.

"Cannon's win continues a clear-cut pattern for GOP primaries that have been contested on immigration: Hard-liner, single-issue candidates continue to lose," Cohen said.

But Stuart Rothenberg of the Rothenberg Report called Utah's 3rd District primary "a skirmish" in the GOP national immigration war. "It wasn't settled there. You won't have much of a general election (because the district is so heavily Republican). Some who feel very strongly on the immigration question may stay home" in the final 3rd District election.

But Rothenberg said that won't affect the final outcome — Cannon wins.

Burridge, a consumer rights attorney, said that while he'll talk about immigration at times, he will mainly go after other areas of Cannon's 10-year voting record.

A winner of national debate awards while in college, Burridge says he'll try to meet Cannon face-to-face "anytime, anywhere."

Just a few of Burridge's comments about Cannon:

• "We deserve a full-time representative."

Burridge says he'll close his law practice if he wins in November. He charges that Cannon spends time on his private capital investment firms. Cannon says he doesn't spend time on private business, and that's the main reason he's personally lost tens of millions of dollars since his 1996 election.

• "I'm totally against gambling, especially in Utah."

Burridge charges that while Cannon says he's against gambling, in reality he's taken significant campaign contributions from pro-gambling interests. And a former Cannon staffer, David H. Safavian, was recently convicted of lying to federal authorities as part of the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal. Safavian was no longer working for Cannon when he became caught up in the scandal.

"Cannon voted in favor" of some of the bills that Abramoff pushed for Indian gambling interests, said Burridge.

But Cannon counters that he's consistently voted to curb gambling in all instances.

• "Chris has voted 97 percent of the time with House Republican leadership. I will be an independent voice for the district," said Burridge.

While it is always tough for a Democrat to raise money and win in the heavily Republican 3rd District, Burridge says a number of issues are working for him.

First, it is not a presidential election year. And while 3rd District residents buck the national trend and give Bush a job approval rating of more than 50 percent, not having Bush's name on the ballot should help him, Burridge said.

Second, Burridge said neither Congress as a whole nor Cannon specifically is greatly liked in the district. A recent Deseret Morning News/KSL-TV poll conducted by Dan Jones & Associates found that 38 percent of the district residents hold an unfavorable opinion of Cannon.

Republicans nationally and locally are divided on a number of issues, including immigration, and apathy runs through the GOP, Burridge said.

"I'd debate Chris every night if I could," said Burridge. "Maybe I'll get only three to five debates with him. But I'll be taking my messages to the voters, engaging them in dialogue. And if he's not there, that will be noticed."

Jacob planning another run

For Jacob, the low point in the race came when he learned President Bush was going to endorse Cannon. "How do you overcome that?" he said. "I'm not sure anyone could have won after that."

Jacob praised Bush for the move.

"For the president to support someone who was supporting him took a lot of courage because if Chris lost, what would that do to the president? I think it was pretty neat."

Jacob will review the campaign today with his staff

"I need to be better connected with the establishment," he said. "I think that people are very important but not every one of them can get to know you. It would be nice to have endorsements (like Cannon did). That's important.

"And I'm going to have a lot more money in the bank when I start next time.

For now, though, he's supporting Cannon "100 percent," and sounded ready to join the campaign against Burridge.

"First of all, he's obviously a Democrat, and second of all, he's too young, he's 30 years old. And finally, he has less name recognition than I did. I don't see him as a serious threat right now."

Burridge is an attorney who has practiced immigration law and though he doesn't plan to use illegal immigration as a wedge issue, it will be part of the campaign.

"The great thing about America is that somebody who is 31 years old can run for U.S. Congress," Burridge said. "Jacob's contempt for my age shows his contempt for the people in our district. Utah is the youngest state in the nation, and Provo is the youngest city of 100,000 or more in the country. Why doesn't it make sense for them to have a young representative? Someone who has student loans, someone who has a mortgage, who has car loans, things my constituents have to deal with. That's why I'll make a better representative."

Clearly, Jacob wants to make good on his promise to follow the Ronald Reagan principle that Republicans help Republicans.

Asked if he would donate to Cannon's campaign, Jacob said, "I put my money where my mouth is."

The Real Race Starts Today...

As we prepare to celebrate Independence Day next week, Utahans will participate in the local primary election. Some pundits who perpetuate the Myth Machine may say the general election will be decided today. Those who disseminate this rumor do so to defy the reality of this district. A Democrat has won in this District with substantial margins many times in the past—see here and here.

We should not disgrace the legacy of our independence by declaring victory after what amounts to a straw poll in the form of a closed GOP primary as the full expression of the will of the people. In 2002, the last midterm cycle, all of the voters in the closed GOP primary only comprised 6.7% of voters. Additionally, Sherrie Swenson, Salt Lake County Recorder, predicts less than 10% voter turn out in today’s primary. Moreover, this cycle has disproportional amount of undecided voters among registered republicans. After so much publicity between my GOP opponents, this shows discontent for this illusory choice in the closed primary. To close a primary and then declare a winner by pundits is a classic use of the Myth Making Machine. Next week let us celebrate our independence, democracy and the fact that this race has only just begun.

With all that is going on in the world--skyrocketing oil prices, surging health care costs, rising tuition with student aid not following, controversy over the war in Iraq, big corporations weaseling out of pensions, prescription drug cost shooting through the roof--the Cannon team aimed low and fired away at Jacob. All over a groudskeeper and a domestic worker named Oscar and Marta. Read today's story in the Deseret Morning News Jacob Denies Hiring any Illegal Immigrants. If the Congressman gets his way, this will be the issue that gets him through the primary.

Utahans deserve a better debate about real issues that affect them in their lives. May we have a real conversation about our future after June 27th.

Top Ten Reasons Utah County Democrats and Independents will not be "Assimilated"

In a recent article in both the Tribune and Morning News Marian Monnahan said that because the Utah Democratic Party added planks in favor of traditional marriage and rights for the unborn to their platform they are no different than Republicans and therefore they should be assimilated into the Republican Party. Though I agree with the clarifications in the new Utah County Platform, there are many reasons why we are different than the GOP. The Monnahan remark reminded me of the old Star Trek episodes where the Borg wanted to take over the universe. I think the rallying cry of Monnahan is similar to the Borg claim: "Prepare to be assimilated. . . . Resistance is futile". Just another example of how the GOP myth makers are a message of control and we Democrats fight for freedom of choice in choosing our representatives. That is why I won't be assimilated and therefore offer my top ten reasons Utah County Democrats--and most people in the third district--will not be assimilated.
10. We stand for better funding of education and better pay for teachers.
9. We stand for clean air and water for our children.
8. We stand for comprehensive reform on immigration not one-sided platitudes focused solely on deportation or on the other hand creation of a sub-class of indentured servants that benefits only the benefactors of cheap labor--i.e. huge agribusiness.
7. We oppose elimination of an estate tax that is designed to stop mass accumulation of wealth in the hands of a few that goes against a broadening the gap between the richest of Americans and the poorest of the poor.
6. We stand for tax incentives for the middle class and small businesses instead of the vast majority of tax cuts for the wealthiest one percent of Americans.
5. We stand for higher wages for workers.
4. We stand for transparency in government--not secret meetings where Enron gets to write the nation's energy policy.
3. We stand for an effective fighting force with a Congress that takes care of troops when at war by opposing cuts in combat pay. We also stand for veterans after they get home by fighting against cuts in veteran's health benefits.
2. We stand for educational opportunity for everyone. This includes opposition to elimination of Pell Grants and subsidized student loans-which my incumbent opponent voted to cut in Congress.
1. We stand for an independent voice in Washington, instead of a Congressman that just rubber-stamps the partisan leadership of people like Tom Delay. My incumbent opponent voted with party leadership 97% of the time.

We fight for the people's interest. We will not be assimilated and resistance is not futile.

The Real Cancer on Society

I was invited to UVSC to give a one minute speech after the Cannon/Jacob debate on Saturday. I watched the debate and thought to myself "what about this picture involves a real choice for change?" I couldn't see anything hopeful. Right now the media is focused on immigration, and the debate focused about 70% of the questions on this sole topic. You could tell the questions were submitted primarily by the candidates or their close supporters. There were no questions about health care, wages or the war in Iraq. We should not choose our representatives based solely on the current "hot topic" of the day. We should look at an array of topics--dinner table issues-areas that effect people everyday when we vote for our representatives. We deserve a choice--not manipulation and control in our elective system. This comes from a diverse discussion of the issues.

I have heard on many occasions Mr. Jacob point out "a Republican will win this race." Now, I vehemently disagree with this statement on several levels. Not just because I am the Democratic Party's candidate in this race, but what it says about his mentality. It says to me that he has no hope for rule by the people, no regard for freedom of choice--or agency if you will, it shows contempt for the freewill of the people and for the system itself. Now Mr. Jacob is not the only person or influence that wants to control the system. Special interests and lobbyist like Jack Abramoff believe that Washington is for sale, the will of the people mean little and the money writes the policy in Congress. Mr. Cannon likes to call undocumented immigrants a "cancer eating away at the very core of the very fiber of our country." I think the real cancer on our society are those who will take away our choice and manipulate our democracy.

I stand for freedom of choice of our representatives, not control and manipulation of the system through money. The real cancer on society is the influence money has on politics.

Breaking the Myth

It is hard to trace the exact day that the Cannon Brother Myth Making Machine was fired up and running in Utah County, but I assume it was sometime in the mid-nineties. During that time I was a missionary in Michigan. When I left for Lansing, Bill Orton was my representative and a good local boy could represent Utah as a Democrat. When I got home, the Gingrich Revolution had occurred and something was amiss politically in my home district. I think it was the Myth Making Machine.

You see, Bill Orton enjoyed powerful support in Utah County. There are several precincts where Congressman Orton won with 2-to-1 or even 3-to-1 margins in places like Pleasant Grove, Lindon, Orem, American Fork, Spanish Fork, Springfield, Payson, Salem, Santequin and even Provo. If you don't believe me look at the mid-term canvassing reports for 1990 and 1994. Overtime, the lore was born and grew into conventional acceptance that Utah County is the most conservative place in the nation. This assertion is a myth.

I agree that social issues are important for people in Utah County--they are important to me. Often they are threshold issues when people vote. But when one understands that a candidate is strong on social issues like family values and life for the unborn and looks deeper at economics and issues of fairness, the people from Utah County identify with those who advocate for democratic ideals. Most people in Utah want more funding for education and a tax system that favors small businesses and the middle class. They want clean air and water for their children. They favor policies that allow students to get as much education as possible. I stand for those principles.

Though the Newt Gingriches, Rush Limbaughs, Sean Hannities and Cannon Brothers want to fire up the machine and scream their self-interested definition of Utah County's people at us at every opportunity, Utahans are dynamic, educated and diverse people. I reject their restrictive and condescending definition of us as mere propaganda. It is a hasty generalization. I know, I grew up here, they did not. I know my people--the overwhelming majority are more like Bill Orton than Steve Forbes. We need policies that work for the people not the Forbeses of the world. It is time for us to have a representative that truly reflects the district. It is time for us to take our country back and defy the machine.

Pony Express Days Parade and Festival & Riverton Arts Festival

Yesterday, I walked in the Pony Express Days Parade. I tried to meet as many people on the parade route as possible. Fortunately, about half way down the road some saintly soul gave me a cold Aquafina water to drink. Bless your soul. After getting sufficiently sunburned in the parade--I forgot to put on sunscreen--we met up at our booth at the Festival in Eagle Mountain. At the Parade I met my old Riverton neighborhood friends, and former Southland Elementary School classmates, Jody Gallacher and her brother Mark Gallacher--a local American Family Insurance Agent.

At the festival the my opponents and I agreed to participate in a dunk toss for charity. The order of dunking was I, Christian Burridge, first,

John Jacob, second and Congressman Chris Cannon finished third.

Jacob attempted several times to dunk Cannon. However, he was unsuccessful. It was finally Burridge, Marissa Burridge that is--Christian's wife--that hit the pin that took down Cannon. We all had a great time. Hats off to my opponents for being good sports. We raised hundreds of dollars for the local youth council.

Later that evening I went to The Riverton Arts Festival. I met many people from Riverton, my home town, and the surrounding cities. I ran into my great friends from Oquirrh Hills Middle School and Bingham High School Brecka Gustaveson Scott and Dave Witt.

In the Daily Universe

A wonderful feature story on Christian was in BYU's Daily Universe today. As Christian is a graduate of BYU's J. Reuben Clark Law School, when the Daily Universe received notice earlier this month that he is the Democratic nominee, they were very excited to interview him. He spent a pleasant afternoon with Amy Brennan, the author of the article, while she asked him an impressive array of questions about his background, his family, and his reasons for seeking office.

Scandinavian Days

Ephraim, UT

Christian, Marissa and their kids took part in Ephraim's Scandinavian Heritage Festival this weekend. As a former Snow College students, Christian and Marissa had a great time meeting and talking with the citizens of Sanpete County. They were very encouraging and supportive, and he appreciated being able to hear their concerns and desires.

The Sanpete Democrats invited Christian and his family to join them on their "float" they decorated for Saturday morning's parade: a patriotically outfitted pontoon boat belonging to Sanpete Demo members Boyd and Avrin Brotherson. Draped on either side of the boat was a banner inscripted with, along with Christian's name, the names of the group members who are running for office this year: Kim Christison, for Utah House 68; Vern Fisher, for Commissioner; and Kevin Holman, for Sheriff.

Though the 40 lbs. of saltwater taffy only lasted a couple of blocks, everyone had a great time. Christian's daughter, Celia, especially loved throwing candy to the crowd. She was most disappointed when it ran out.

Many thanks to the Sanpete Democrats for all of their help this weekend, and all of the effort they put in to making everything go smoothly.

Doug: Let's take a call from Christian in Salt Lake. Christian, welcome.

Christian: Hi, this is Christian Burridge. How're you doing, Doug?

Doug: Fine, thanks - how are you?

Christian: Good. I'm the Democratic nominee; I'm going to be running against either John Jacob or Chris Cannon in the fall. I'm going to be on the ticket--

Doug: Right--

Christian: Proud to be on the phone with you today.

Doug: Good!

Christian: I just wanted to talk to you - I've been traveling throughout the third district in the last month or so, and I'm finding a lot of people that are ready for some real change. I think people are seeing that the GOP is just going to stand up for the same national agenda; they rubberstamp whatever the national leaders do, and the people in the third district are ready for real change and are ready for a Democrat to be able to represent the interests of Utah, a lot like Jim Matheson does. And I'm proud to do that.

Doug: What makes you think that they're ready for change?

Christian: I can feel it in the air - when I talk to my neighbors, who are Republicans and independents and moderates. This district is primarily made up of moderate voters - people who aren't necessarily partisan, and they're ready for someone to advocate for their interests, not necessarily always the GOP interests. You know, Cannon's voting record - he voted 95% of the time with Tom DeLay, and I think that people are tired of that, and they're ready for a grassroots candidate who actually represents the voice of the people instead of all these self-funded millionaires that try and buy the office. We are tired of the "pay to play" politics. We need candidates that will represent our future, for our children, and really stand up for the taxes that people are paying, and stand up for good fiscal responsibility instead of just the national GOP agenda.

Doug: Well, if Saturday's convention was any indication, the voters of the third district - some of them anyway, certainly the party faithful are thinking - Republican party faithful are thinking - about immigration. How are you thinking about that issue and how you may appeal to the voters of the third district?

Christian: Well, it's a big issue. I'm an attorney; I actually have practiced immigration law in the past, and I've been down in the trenches on this issue. I think that Americans want real immigration reform - real comprehensive reform. I mean, Mr. Cannon's position is kindof a "wink wink nod nod" policy. it's pro-business so they can get cheap labor. What we really need is a sound, economic-based solution. I mean, this really comes down to supply and demand: you have a big demand for labor over here, and you have a supply of labor on the other side of the border but... You know, there was an article a couple of weeks ago in the Tribune that talked about how some of these businesses are sending down "coyotes" to bring the undocumented immigrants across the border. If we can regulate child labor in this country - which we've been able to do - then we can regulate our immigration laws. We've had these laws on the books for years, and now, all of the sudden, it's a hot topic issue. These Republicans are scurrying around, trying to get a solution, when they've had power for five years to do something about it - and they haven't. And the reason why is because they have a hard time from the business interests, the big agricultural companies and such, that want the cheap labor. We stand for comprehensive reform that going to be good for wages, for everybody, and it's going to be good to boost our economy and to be able to have a fair and just system when it comes to immigration policy.

Doug: Well, Christian, let me ask you this, finally - I wonder how you're thinking about.. you mentioned your neighbors - moderates and independents, and even your Republican neighbors - as you've said, you kindof feel something different in the air. And I'm wondering, what makes them change their mind? What is making them rethink now the Democratic party in such a conservative district as the third?

Christian: It's Republican fatigue. They're seeing that they've sent Republicans back to Washington and they do not represent the interests of our children, of our families. They just rubberstamp the national agenda. I'm standing up for our families. Each member of my family owes 30 thousand dollars as part of the national debt. These Republicans are spending our kids' futures, they're mortgaging their futures. They're getting rid of student loans. We need somebody who's going to stand up for our children and our future, and I'm proud to do that.

My Reasons for Running

When Marissa and I had our first meeting with the leaders of the Utah State Democratic Party, Wayne Holland, Jr., the State Party Chairman, asked me why I wanted to run for Congress. I told him that I just couldn't sit around anymore. I had to do something.

Given all the things that have gone wrong with our leadership in Washington, D.C., I did not want to have to explain to my girls in 15 years that I didn't do anything when our government was not taking us in the right direction. I wanted to stand up for their future. I wanted them to have a chance to live the American dream like their parents were living.

Though my own children were an initial motivator for me to run for Congress, I am ready to stand up for all of our children. I want them to receive a quality free public education. I want them to have clean air and water. I want them to be safe from nuclear waste and from the effects of military testing of weapons. I want them to be free from an irrational national debt mortgaged by special interests. I want them to have a better future than my generation. If we don't change our course my kids and your kids are not going to have the same opportunities that make America great. For this reason this campaign is a tribute to Alma and Celia, and all the kids of Utah.

Lone Peak High School

Christian's wife Marissa Burridge was born and raised in Pleasant Grove, Utah. Marissa's high school debate coach, Mrs. Claudia Stillman invited Christian to speak to her Government and Civics class at Lone Peak High school.

Christian, a consumer rights lawyer, taught the students about personal financial responsibility. Christian shared some stories about how he has witnessed many of his clients run into finacial ruin and eventually having to file for bankruptcy. He later discussed how to avoid bankruptcy and how to maintain a healthy credit score. He said, "This fall many credit card companies will be trying to get you to sign up for credit cards at college. It is okay to use credit, but be wise in their use. Later on you will need your credit to buy a car and a house when you get married."

Christian later discussed the importance of voting and being part of the political process. He said that this generation needs to stand up and vote so student loans and pell grants will be protected. He pledged to stand up for students in Congress.

"This Congress has gotten rid of pell grants and subsidized student loans. With the raising cost of tuition this next generation of students needs to stand up for their interests when it comes to whom they vote for."

Decide for yourselves who will be the best representative of the ideals that you hold. The ability to politically participate is a gift from our forbears that is too precious to disregard.

Christian Burridge receives Democratic Party's Nomination
for U.S. Congress in Utah's 3rd District

On May 13, 2006 Christian Burridge, a consumer rights attorney from South Jordan, Utah received the nomination from the Democratic Party to run for Congress to represent Utah's 3rd Congressional District. The 3rd district is comprised of most of west Salt Lake County, a large protion of Utah County, the east side of Juab County and all of Sanpete, Sevier, Millard and Beaver counties. See map. Burridge, a fifth generation Utah native from Riverton and graduate of Bingham High School and BYU's J. Reuben Clark Law School, was enthused by the electricity in the croud at the convention. In his remarks Burridge said "America is rising up for change and the tide is turning . . . . We are a part . . . of a new generation of Democrats and we will feed the fuel that allows the light of democracy to burn brighter than ever." The following is a transcript of his convention speech:

The Lights That Will Guide Us Home
Ladies and Gentlemen, fellow Democrats, my family, friends and neighbors, indeed the tide is turning! It is with great honor I accept your nomination to be the next congressman from Utah’s Third District. Today, I find myself standing here at the crossroads of the west of our beautiful country and at the crossroads of a new century. I am proud to be a Democrat. I am proud to be a member of a party with a strong heritage from our forbearers who fought for rule by the people, civil rights and equality. They prevailed because they fought against injustice and tyranny and we will do the same today.

My being a Democrat is not a recent conversion. It runs deep in my blood back at least a century. Two of my eight Utah pioneer great-grandfathers ran as democrats a hundred years ago, and were elected to local office. In fact, my great grandfather Parley Pratt Christison was the sheriff of Juab County—one of the counties I seek to represent today. They served faithfully and I am proud of their heritage.

This tradition was passed down to my parents and to me. I am the youngest of six children in a working class family. My late father was a Utah Highway Patrolman and retired a Command Sergeant Major after 40 years of service in the Utah Army National Guard. My mother was a public school teacher. They taught me that I lived in a country where anything was possible. I believe that through the years we all share a common thread of hope. A hope that everyone has a chance—a hope for a better tomorrow. Their hope and work made this country a better place. I stand today for that same hope. A century later, I believe my democratic ancestors look down proudly on their son who has the opportunity to become a member of the United States Congress.
However, we live in a time where conventional wisdom rails against those of us who call ourselves Utah Democrats. Yes, we have taken our bumps and bruises in the past, but those days are behind us and today we rise up to take back our future. We are here today to do the same as our founders once wrote in the preamble of the Constitution: “To secure the blessings of liberty for ourselves and our posterity.” When securing these blessings, our founders built a lighthouse for themselves and for us. This lighthouse shines bright the principles of democracy. It stands for the democracy that we strive to achieve in an ideal society. This is the light that has made America a beacon on a hill.
Unfortunately, these lights have not always burned bright, and lately under Republican leadership they have flickered. Through Republican policies the tide has taken America out to a sea of rough waters. But if we stand-up for democratic principles, America’s beacon will burn bright and we can navigate our way home. The Republicans want to create dark and illusory divisions at every turn—whether it is by using race, religion or gender they espouse the tactic of divide and conquer. But what they don’t understand is that their methods are flawed—because after all, we are all in the same boat. They don’t understand that America is rising up for change and the tide is turning.
Today, we are a part of a new generation—a new generation of Democrats—and we will feed the fuel that allows the light of democracy to burn brighter than ever.

When we strive for democracy we can live in a world where we can express ourselves and adhere to our values without fear of government control. Like you, I am a Democrat with values. The Republicans are famous for making waves under the guise of advocating family values. But we Democrats that stand for the light of democratic principles show that we actually value our families. We see education as an investment—not just another line item expense. We believe that all children should have health coverage. We stand up so that our children will have clean air and water in the distant future. We fight to end discrimination so all of our families—however they are made up—have a decent chance.
We want a bright light shining in the activities of government. We don’t want to muddy the waters with secret back-door meetings with Enron and oil companies. We Democrats stand for honest leadership and open government. We stand against warrantless wiretapping of Americans, and we will not put up with anymore lies when it comes to sending our troops into war!
When we espouse the lights of democracy we stand for Real Security. This means we protect our people from all threats foreign and domestic. The way this administration dealt with Katrina will mark their stewardship of America for years to come. We Democrats can do better and we will do better.

When the beacon of democracy shines bright we see pensions as sacred and they must be protected. If the Congress can make it so you can’t bankrupt out of student loans then big corporations should not be able to bankrupt out of pensions.
We believe in a rising tide that raises all the boats in the water. That’s why we need a tax policy that makes sense. The bulk of tax incentives belong to the middle class and small businesses and not the wealthiest one percent of Americans. We believe that where much is given much is required. Republicans believe where much is given little if any is required. If you don’t believe me just ask Dick Cheney what he is doing with his $1.9 million tax refund.
Our founders built us a lighthouse that shows us the way to good government. Under Republican leadership the tide has taken us out to sea, our lights have grown dim and we are at risk of running into the dark rocks of tyranny and oppression. But the tide is turning and today we have a choice. We can choose to again secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity. We can fight to find our way back to the safe Harbor of America—the safe harbor of opportunity and prosperity. If we espouse the founding principles—the lights of a democratic society—we will not lose our way. We will find our way. We can follow these lights. These are the lights that will guide our way home.
May we roll in with the tides—and roll with the changes—to a better and brighter tomorrow! Now let’s fire the Cannon!
